摘要:
Automation changes productivity, labor demand, and household income, but its consequences may extend beyond the labor market to how households organize their assets and debts. Using Chinese household panel data linked to city-level robot exposure, we find that greater exposure leads to a broad reallocation of household balance sheets. Households accumulate nonfinancial wealth, become more likely to own housing, reduce credit-card and car debt, and shift financial holdings away from fixed deposits and stocks toward other financial products. Labor-market evidence points to a combination of higher average earnings and larger short-run income fluctuations. Taken together, the evidence suggests that changes in both household resources and income stability shape wealth accumulation, debt management, and portfolio choice. These responses vary with households' baseline labor-market characteristics and initial financial positions, consistent with differences in both exposure to labor-market change and the capacity to adjust. More broadly, our findings show that evaluating automation solely through employment and earnings misses an important dimension of structural transformation: how its gains and risks are absorbed through household balance sheets.
